Blue Beetle Movie Review

I took the family to see Blue Beetle today and the movie was fantastic, going beyond the typical superhero film. It brimmed with emotion and a captivating storyline, rather than relying solely on CGI fight scenes.

With that said, the CGI was fantastic, and the use of practical suits was genius, evoking the charm of some of Marvel’s phase 1 movies. If I had to draw a comparison, I’d say it felt a little like Iron Man and Sam Raimi’s Spiderman with a little bit of Ant Man.

The film’s core revolved around the family dynamic, setting it apart from recent movies I’ve seen. It had heart; it even moved me to tears at times, a sentiment I wouldn’t anticipate in a DC movie. The cultural references hit close to home, especially for those raised in Latino households. From spanglish to family dynamics and the humor.

Xolo Mariduena proved he’s a star, establishing himself as a leading man who could carry a film. Of course, this doesn’t overshadow the rest of the cast. They transcended mere side characters, truly embodying the heart of the movie. Personally, Nana stood out as my favorite, and I felt myself wanting more of her. The only aspect that wasn’t entirely sold on was the villain. I didn’t hate her as much as I probably should have and wish there would have been a little more to that character.

The music greatly enhanced the movie’s experience, encompassing everything from a captivating synth score to some beloved tracks from Selena, Cypress Hill, and even Air Supply. This infusion of nostalgia made me feel as though I was transported back to the 80s and 90s era of filmmaking.

To sum up, it’s a movie I wholeheartedly recommend – a delightful, heartwarming experience with compelling action that leaves you smiling by the end. Don’t miss the first post-credit scene!

Let me know, have you seen the movie yet? What did you think?
